Year 2 Term 3

Our topic for Term 3 is ' Horrible Histories'.

We will learning all about life in London in 1666 by looking at the Great Fire of London and how it had a significant impact on the development of modern Britain.

To build upon the children's understanding of London during this time, we will research how the Great Fire started, investigate the factors which contributed to the speed at which it spread and compare the fire service in 1666 to the fire service now. We will also learn about how the fire affected different people and look at the different ways we can find out about historical events.

We will also be focusing on the story of ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ to enhance our topic vocabulary and develop our reading and writing skills.

We started our topic with some exciting impact days.  We looked at a variety of different sources to find out about the Great Fire of London, we looked at the houses in 1666 and compared them to houses now, we looked at maps to see where the fire spread to and identified the landmarks that were destroyed and we looked at fire safety and created our own posters.  Ask us what we know about the Great Fire of London!

In Maths this week we have been learning to use clocks to tell the time. We created our own group clocks using resources from the classroom and then made different times. Can you practise reading the time at home looking at o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times? If you fancy a challenge, try telling the time at 5 minute intervals e.g. 5 minutes past 2.

We have been busy this term making our own Tudor houses as our Art and DT project.  We measured and cut some wood to make wooden frames, we looked at the features of Tudor houses to design our walls and we trialled different ways of making a roof.  We think they look amazing!

We have worked in groups to make our own songs about the Great Fire of London to the tune of 'London's Burning'.  Have a look at the videos below to see how fantastic our ideas were!

In Creative Week we have enjoyed lots of fun and practical activities to support our learning of the Notting Hill Carnival. We have learned about the Caribbean history of the carnival, using maps to locate different countries and their distance to the equator which would affect the weather and temperature of the country. We have participated in a Reggae Jamaican dance and practised playing Calypso music using a variety of instruments. Finally we experimented in Design and Technology with making miniature carnival floats for a parade.

We had a great time visiting the Thameside fire station.  The firefighters talked to us about what they have to do and showed us around the fire station.  We were shown where the firefighters get ready, what is in their kit and what equipment they keep on board the fire engine.  We even had a go at squirting the hose!

Class 9 loved baking their bread rolls, thank you so much for all your help and support! We hope they taste delicious.
